Happy thinking! Please be prepared to analytically and textually discuss how Chillingworth and Dimmesdale are foils by the time you arrive at my door on Friday, 8/26.
foils-characters the author juxtaposes to highlight differences and similarities (often both literally and figuratively) 1. provide three textually supported examples of depictions of Chillingworth and Dimmesdale from chapters 9 and 10 in which Hawthorne specifically juxtaposes characteristics of each. 2. for each example, please make an attempt to indicate the figurative use of the juxtaposition (why does Hawthorne do this? are the characters a symbol of something? do their similarities indicate something about men in general? ) Please be prepared for our SL ch 1-10 quiz on Monday, 8/29. 1. light in ch 7 (Hester and Pearl’s interactions with it; how each of them perceive it; connotations of light and an absence of light) 2. images and associations with Pearl ch 8 (consider how Pearl is described and ponder the symbolic importance of the images that Hawthorne surrounds her in) 3. diction and syntax choices for Bellingham, Dimmesdale, and Hester ch 8 (how do they speak to each other? Tone? Specific structural choices? Specific words?) 4. symbolic and thematic importance of the reflection ch 7 (extrapolate out the myriad of meanings of what Hester sees in the armor) If you need an example for your post about Pearl, look here!
Text Analysis "Her nature appeared to possess depth, too, as well as variety; but--or else Hester's fears deceived her-- it lacked reference and adaptation to the world into which she was born. The child could not be amenable to rules. In giving her existence, a great law had been broken, and the result was a being whose elements were perhaps beautiful and brilliant, but all in disorder..." (p 84-85) Because she is a product of a sinful act she must therefore be in exile from the society in which she lives. Because of this her basic existence is malignant to other but justifiable to her. By juxtaposing the “broke…law” up against Pearl’s inherent “beauty and brilliance” Hawthorne is able to articulate that the sin, while against the law of society, are motived from a place of love rather than a place of malice. Please post one piece of text from chapter six and one sentence of analysis that proves the following:
Pearl is the physical manifestation of Hester's sin. Please ensure you post by 7:00 am on Tuesday, 8/23. Please post one piece of text from chapter six and one sentence of analysis that proves the following:
