By exploring the roles of both African Americans and women through rhetorical questions, Truth is able to articulate the hypocrisy of the treatment of African Americans and women. To firmly communicate this purpose, Truth states, "Ain't I a woman?" Truth's choice to articulate her idea in such a way implies that society is ignorant due to their unequal treatment of women and African Americans, and that hypocrisy in the portrayal of them as equal. This helps to underscore her overarching ideas that all people should be treated equal through the insultingly obvious answer to the question, the audience is forced to agree with her or remain ignorant. This also helps portray the solution to the problem of their treatment, treating them equally, as the only obvious and logical answer.
Below I have attached the outline of the assignment you will be completing in relation to The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and the example I will be reviewing on Wednesday, 11/12.
Here are your notes on the use of rhetorical devices in Truth's speech. Please remember that this speech is an option for the paper due Friday, 11/21. The earlier you begin working the earlier you get done!
